About the Garrett Ham Scholarship

I established the Garrett Ham Scholarship in 2008. I was in law school at the time, having graduated Ouachita the year before. When I went through the Honors Program, I was the only theology student to write a senior thesis. I found this disheartening.

So, I decided to encourage other Christian Studies majors to take part. I am therefore happy to support high-quality ministry students like Taylor Bascue.

I have great admiration for the scholar/pastor of the early church.  Modern church leaders rarely emulate greats like Athanasius and Augustine. They consequently lack the proper context for their work. I believe many divinity students feel they must choose between scholarship and ministry. This is a mistake, as the two are closely related.

A good pastor must be deeply grounded in Scripture. In addition, to benefit the Church, a great scholar must engage in the work of ministry.

The scholarship provides students with approximately $1,250 to aid their research efforts. Taylor Bascue plans to use the funds to buy research materials for his senior thesis. I am grateful for the small part I can play in his education.
